Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine are a unique archipelago in the heart of the St. Lawrence Gulf, made up of a dozen islands, seven of which are connected by dunes and bridges. Although geographically closer to the Maritimes, these islands are part of the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region of Quebec and have a population of about 13,000. The first permanent residents were 22 Acadians hired around 1761 to hunt walruses, marking the official beginning of colonization. Today, Madelinots of Acadian origin make up nearly 86% of the population, preserving a distinctive French-speaking Acadian culture with a unique dialect. The islands can be reached by ferry from Souris or by plane from Montreal, Quebec City, and Gaspé.

Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine offer an exceptional insular lifestyle marked by an economy focused on the sea and tourism. Fishing remains the traditional economic mainstay, generating significant economic benefits, mainly from lobster and snow crab. Tourism has become the archipelago’s second largest industry. The real estate market in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine has experienced spectacular growth in recent years. This record growth in Quebec can be explained by a catch-up in prices that were historically too low compared to construction costs, which are twice as high as on the mainland. The influx of nearly 920 new residents since 2018, mostly aged 25 to 44, is fueling sustained demand and rejuvenating the islands’ population. Properties with sea views are particularly sought after, creating an emerging high-end market. Buyers are attracted by the unique Acadian identity, breathtaking scenery, and authentic island lifestyle.
